World Cup of T20; The 2022 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup is the eighth ICC Men’s T20 World Cup tournament

There have been seven previous ICC Men’s T20 World Cup tournaments, with 2022 marking the eighth. Between October 16 and November 13, 2022, it will be played in Australia.

The tournament was scheduled to begin in 2020, however the International Cricket Council (ICC) announced in July 2020 that it would be delayed until 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The T20 World Cup was originally scheduled to take place in India in 2021, but was subsequently shifted to the United Arab Emirates and Oman. The ICC declared in August 2020 that Australia would host the rescheduled competition in 2022. The ICC finalised the tournament schedule on January 21, 2022. Australia, the tournament’s host country and a past winner, is the current favourite.

All 12 teams that advanced to the 2021 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup’s Super 12 round were automatically qualified for the 2022 event.

On the basis of their performances in the 2021 tournament and their rankings as of 15 November 2021, Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, England, India, Pakistan, New Zealand, and South Africa were automatically qualified for the Super 12 phase of this event.

Group stage competitors included Namibia, Scotland, Sri Lanka, and the West Indies.

Qualifying Rounds Around the World

Eight teams from Regional Qualifiers and the four best-ranked teams not already qualified for the World Cup or qualifiers made up the Global Qualifiers for the 2021 ICC T20 World Cup.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced on 24 March 2020 that, due to the ongoing COVID-19 epidemic, all ICC qualifying tournaments scheduled for play before 30 June 2020 had been postponed. As a result of the pandemic’s disruption, the ICC revised the qualification path in December 2020. 

The ICC announced in August 2021 that the EAP qualifier had been postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic. For this reason, the Philippines qualified as the best EAP team for the World Cup Qualifications.

As a result of the pandemic, Group B of the Asia qualifier was postponed in October 2021, with Hong Kong advancing as the top-ranked team.

Jersey advanced to the Global Qualifiers after winning their first four matches in the European Regional Final. Similarly, Germany came in second place in the European group and advanced after finishing ahead of Italy in terms of net run rate.

In the Asia qualifying tournament, Group A was won by Bahrain, which edged out Qatar on net run rate. After winning their first five matches in the Americas Qualifier, the United States were the first team from that group to advance to the Global Qualifiers. Canada, who came in second in the Americas qualifying group, also joined them.

For the Global Qualifiers, Uganda was the last team standing after they won the Africa Regional Final. The remaining four spots were filled by the first and second-place finishers from the two Global Qualifiers. Sixteen teams competed in the Global Qualifiers: the four worst-performing teams from the 2021 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup (Ireland, Netherlands, Oman, and Papua New Guinea), the top-ranked T20I side (Singapore), the next four best-performing T20I sides (Zimbabwe, Nepal, UAE, and Singapore), and the top-two teams from each Regional Final.

 

Only two teams from Global Qualifier A, Ireland and the United Arab Emirates, made it to the T20 World Cup.  The T20 World Cup’s Group A features the United Arab Emirates (after they won the Global Qualifier A) and Ireland (after they were sent to Group B). Both the Netherlands and Zimbabwe qualified from Global Qualifier B to play in the T20 World Cup. After winning the Global Qualifier B competition, Zimbabwe was assigned to Group B for the T20 World Cup, while the Netherlands were put in Group A.
