The store opened its doors to the public on February 3 with a ‘Grand Inauguration Ceremony’ which brought together many Sydney-based non-resident Indians and featured former Australian cricketer Brett Lee, Indians in Sydney announced on Facebook. The store’s façade features the brand’s signature gold, geometric pattern and its interior has the same warm toned aesthetic as its India stores.

A large print of brand ambassador Alia Bhatt features in the store along with a dedicated segment for Malabar Gold and Diamonds’ ‘Mine’ diamond jewellery line. The store opened in time for Valentine’s Day on February 14 as well as the Southern Hemisphere’s autumn wedding season.

“This is a proud moment for us as the first Indian International jewellery retailer to begin operations in Australia,” said Malabar Gold and Diamonds’ chairman M P Ahammed, India Retailing reported.  “We have been a strong proponent of ‘Make in India; Market to the World’, showcasing the artistry of Indian jewellery on a global stage and expanding into Australia is another testimony of our commitment to this initiative.”

Malabar Gold and Diamonds has claimed that it is the first Indian fine jewellery brand to open a brick-and-mortar store in Australia. The store launch also takes advantage of the recent bi-lateral free trade agreement between Australia and India, according to Ahammed.
