Handloom expo ‘The Weaving Tradition’ to showcase artisans’ work in Chennai

The National Design Centre, in collaboration with the Development Commissioner (Handlooms), Ministry of Textiles, is set to host ‘The Weaving Tradition: Special Handloom Expo’ in Chennai. Taking place from March 25 to 31 at the R.K. Convention Centre in Neelankarai, the event aims to bring together master weavers and artisans from across the country to showcase India’s diverse handloom heritage.

The expo will feature 75 master weavers, self-help groups, and cooperative societies presenting an array of handcrafted textiles, including silk and cotton sarees, dress materials, home furnishings, shawls, and stoles, the event organisers announced in a press release. By connecting artisans directly with buyers, the event aims to create market linkages that support sustainable livelihoods.

‘The Weaving Tradition’ will also serve as a networking platform for weavers, exporters, and retailers, encouraging collaborations that blend traditional techniques with contemporary design. The initiative aligns with the government’s ‘Vocal for Local’ campaign, promoting Indian handlooms on both national and international stages.

Visitors will have the opportunity to engage with artisans and learn about the intricate weaving techniques that have been passed down through generations. With over 50 varieties of weaves on display, the expo is designed to be a celebration of craftsmanship and creativity, offering a glimpse into India’s rich textile traditions.
