Luis Severino dominates again, Aaron Judge and Gleyber Torres hit back-to-back homers in Yankees’ win over Tigers – The Denver Post

Luis Severino’s stark resurgence continued Monday night, and Aaron Judge and Gleyber Torres gave the Yankees enough offense to make it count.

Severino dominated the Detroit Tigers in a tidy 4-1 win on the road, striking out eight over seven shutout innings while surrendering five hits.

It was the second straight stellar start by Severino, who held the Washington Nationals to one hit over 6.2 shutout innings five days ago in the win that ended the Yankees’ nine-game losing streak.

The recent excellence marks a return to form for Severino, who pitched to a 2-8 record and 7.98 ERA over his first 15 games this season. The two-time All-Star’s last two outings improved his record to 4-8 and lowered his ERA to 6.64.

“I think he’s had some success in his side work, and I think he’s let go a little bit in his mind of thinking about this, that and the other,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said of Severino. “Trusting in his work and then going out and focusing on executing, instead of all the other things. We’ve been talking all year about the stuff [being] there. He’s healthy. This is what he’s capable of.”

Detroit threatened in the sixth inning, when Zach McKinstry tripled with one out in a 1-0 game. But Severino, 29, got the next batter, Riley Greene, to ground to shortstop, and rookie Anthony Volpe threw out McKinstry at home.

The seven-inning outing was the longest of the season for Severino, an impending free agent who had twice gotten through 6.2 innings this year.

The Yankees broke open a scoreless game in the fifth inning when Judge walked and Torres drove him in with an RBI double. Judge and Torres then slugged back-to-back home runs in the seventh inning.

The 384-foot blast was the 29th of the season for Judge, who hit three during Severino’s previous start. Oswaldo Cabrera added an RBI single in the eighth inning to complete the Yankees’ scoring.

Detroit’s lone offense came against reliever Clay Holmes, who served up a solo home run to Akil Baddoo to lead off the ninth inning.

Monday’s series-opening win snapped a two-game losing streak for the Yankees, who dropped the final two contests of a three-game set against the Tampa Bay Rays over the weekend.

The Yankees (63-68) have not won any of their previous 10 series since a three-game sweep of the Kansas City Royals last month. They continue their four-game set in Detroit on Tuesday, with Michael King (3-5, 3.13 ERA) scheduled to face Tigers left-hander Tarik Skubal (3-2, 4.06 ERA).
