Hot and dry conditions will engulf metro Denver Wednesday and the temperatures in parts of northeast Colorado will exceed 100 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

Increasing cloud cover will hold in heat and winds rising in the afternoon could gust at speeds as fast as 17 miles per hour, the weather service said.

The high temperature in Denver will be 97 degrees, decreasing to 64 degrees at night, forecasters said. On Thursday through Saturday, the high temperature is expected to be 94 degrees.

In the mountains west of metro Denver, a few high-elevation storms may develop, kicking out bursts of wind. Meteorologists said any rainfall in the mountains will be light. No rain was expected in Denver until, possibly, Friday afternoon. In eastern Colorado, temperatures on Wednesday are expected to reach 100 degrees around Lamar, La Junta, and Julesburg.
