The Devil’s Thumb Fire, which has been burning on land northeast of Fraser in Grand County since July 4, reached 76% containment Thursday, officials said.
The wildfire broke out after lightning struck near the Devil’s Thumb Trailhead on July 4 and has since grown to 81 acres, according to fire officials. In the last week, the burn area has only grown two acres.
While portions of the fire have been successfully contained, residents in Grand County, Boulder County, Gilpin County and the surrounding areas may continue to see smoke throughout the summer and fall until natural moisture controls the fire, according to a July 14 news release.
In the news release, officials said steep slopes, rugged terrain and unstable conditions challenged firefighting operations as the fire area was full of standing dead and leaning or snagged trees, creating a hazardous situation for firefighters.
Hot and dry weather in the coming weeks may stir the flames up and increase visible smoke, officials said.
