Ways to support your child with online learning

Online learning has been in vogue for many years now. Due to the pandemic and the related issues, online learning has been used even at the school level. Since children could not step out of their homes, schools started conducting online classes. This was a new method of learning for children and many of them found it difficult to cope up.

As parents, you need to help your children with their online learning. You need to be with them to support them as they enter a digital classroom to learn. We have some tips that will help you support your child so they are able to manage online learning without any problems.

Tips to support children for online learning

1. Creating a learning space

The online class your child attends is a digital classroom. To ensure your child is comfortable, you need to have a separate learning space. This will make the child feel like it is a classroom. Earmark an area in your home for your child’s online classes. Ensure that there is no noise or disturbance.

You need to have proper lighting at the learning space. Along with the computer/laptop, you need to have space to keep books and other things. Once the online class is complete, the child should be able to continue to study at this place. Choose the place in such a way that you will be able to monitor the child if required.

2. Make a schedule

In school, children attend classes and participate in activities as per a schedule. Create a similar schedule at home for online learning. The schedule should have the list of online classes to attend. Some online resources may have been shared like videos or websites to visit. Include all these activities in the schedule.

Let the schedule also have time earmarked for study, play, lunch, etc. This makes the online class like a regular school day. It helps to create interest in the child to be a part of this class.

3. Ensure there are no distractions

Children get distracted very fast. When they are attending online classes, you need to ensure there are no distractions. Having a TV switched on or allowing them to keep a mobile phone can be problematic. It can tempt them to get distracted.

Ensure the space where they have the online class is quiet and there is no scope for any distraction. Children find it difficult to concentrate. You need to counsel and help them, so they can concentrate in the class and not be distracted.

4. Ensure they are physically active

In schools, kids are physically active and go to the playground or participate in sports. If your child is into online learning, ensure they get physical activity. Make some time daily for the kids to play outside the house. You can accompany them and ensure they get physical activity.

Whether it is just a walk or taking the dog out walking or playing a sport, physical activity is a must. It keeps the child healthy and fit. It also refreshes them after a tiring day of online classes. You need to give them time, so their physical activity time is not affected.

5. Take care of their eyes

Sitting the whole day in front of the monitor can strain the eyes. Kids need to take breaks periodically. You need to teach the kids to do exercises to relax the eye such as palming. Teach them to blink regularly, so they don’t suffer from dry eyes. This is a very important area where your support is needed, so they do not face any eye problems.
