The Red Sox rallied in the eighth inning and won it in extras after their bullpen snuffed out a number of attempted Yankees rallies to win 3-2 and take two of three from their divisional rivals.

In the tenth, Red Sox second baseman Enrique Hernandez drilled a single off Ron Marinaccio (2-3) into left to score ghost runner Adam Duvall and put the Red Sox (33-33) ahead. The Yankees (38-29) escaped further damage in the rest of inning when Billy McKinney robbed Pablo Reyes of extra-bases (or more) with a leaping catch at the wall in left.

In the bottom of the inning, Chris Martin got D.J. LeMahieu to fly out before striking out Jose Trevino and Anthony Volpe to record his first save of the year.

Things began to go south for the Yankees in the eighth inning when Hernandez singled to left and advanced to second when Gleyber Torres let Billy McKinney’s return throw get past him, resulting in an error. A Reese McGuire walk and sacrifice bunt by Pablo Eyes put runners on second and third with only one out. Hernandez then tied the score at 2-all when Jarren Duran grounded out to Torres.

“We walked the next batter, so, does it change it, maybe,” Aaron Boone said about the impact of Torres’ error.

“We gotta be more careful with the ball, period. But everything affects everything.”

He added that the coaches and players would work through issues to avoid similar miscues.

Both Clay Holmes and Kenley Jensen (2-3) made short work of their opponents in the ninth inning, setting up Hernandez’s heroics in the tenth.

Justin Turner got the scoring started in the second with a home run to right center after an eight pitch at bat.

In the bottom of the inning, Josh Donaldson walked and advanced to third on a ground-rule double by McKinney. Trevino avoided an easy out when his grounder bounced off the second base bag and into left field to score Donaldson and McKinney.

Both starters cruised from there. Clarke Schmidt ended up going 5.1 innings, allowing one run, striking out four and scattering four hits while lowering his ERA to 4.70. Brayan Bello went seven strong innings for the Red Sox, allowing only two runs on three hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Both starters ended the night without a decision.

“Clark was really good, again,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said after the game. “[The Red Sox] overloaded him on lefties there, he navigated really, really well. There were a lot of at-bats in there where I just thought he controlled every situation really well. It was another great step in his growth.”

In the bottom of the fourth, Masataka Yoshida took away an extra-base hit from McKinney with a diving catch. The Yankees were threatening again in bottom of the sixth but Anthony Rizzo wandered too far away from second base and got caught in a run down to end the frame. Rizzo went 0-3 to extend the longest hitless streak of his career (27 at-bats).

“Just a little bit off,” Boone said about his trusty first baseman. “He’ll go through these things a little bit during the season, but he’ll also figure it out.”

“He’s a unique hitter,” Boone said while cracking a smile. “It’s hard for me to relate to what he does, but he obviously does and has for a long, long time. He’s just going through a tough stretch right now.”

The Yankees are now 4-3 since Aaron Judge sprained his toe.

The Bombers will next head to Queens for a subway series with the Mets.
