The Yankees Jekyll and Hyde of a season continued in Saturday’s doubleheader against the Cardinals

The Bombers’ ugly and sloppy 11-4 loss featured poor performance on the field and an even worse one on the mound in game one, however, they bounced back in the nightcap, 6-2, to split the doubleheader on the backs of their bullpen.

The right-hander lasted just four innings allowing seven earned runs on nine hits and three walks registering just two strikeouts. Paul Goldschmidt’s three-run homer in the bottom of the third got the party started for the Red Birds as Severino seemed to be unable to find his groove after surrendering the long ball. Nolan Gorman also blasted a 415-foot two-run homer in the fourth.

The 29-year-old’s ERA ballooned to 6.30 during the final season on his contract as he’s set to hit free agency this winter.

The Bombers’ registered two errors in the field, one from Oswaldo Cabrera who had the opportunity to turn a double play in the third but misfired on the throw to second into right field. Reliever Matt Krook — who came in for Severino in the fifth — threw away another double play in the fifth where the game got completely out of reach as the Red Birds put up a five spot.

Despite the blowout, the first game resumed after a two-plus hour rain delay — a day after Friday night’s game was postponed — as the Yanks continue to battle weather issues during their weekend stay in St. Louis.

The weather cleared for the Bombers’ to rebound in game two. The Yanks got off to a quick start jumping on southpaw Matthew Liberatore in the top of the first.

In his return to St. Louis, Harrison Bader knocked in DJ LeMahieu to open up the scoring. Anthony Volpe, who registered two hits in game one, added two more in game two including an RBI triple off of the right-field wall.

The Yankees’ pen held down the fort as their 3-2 lead was plenty for them to handle. Aaron Boone called on Ian Hamilton as the opener — who surrendered a first-inning homer to Laars Nootbar — and then leaned on the remaining available arms in the stable.

Michael King took on the bulk tossing 3.1 innings, however, Ron Marinaccio, Wandy Peralta, Tommy Kahnle and Clay Holmes all were called upon to finish off the victory.

The Yanks tagged on three more runs in the ninth thanks to a Jose Trevino safety squeeze and Gleyber Torres’ two-run single. Holmes took the ball in the ninth to secure the 6-2 victory.

The Bombers will call on Gerrit Cole to finish off the series on Sunday afternoon. The ace will go toe-to-toe with former Yankee Jordan Montgomery.
