Through the GJEPC‘s welfare arm, the Gem & Jewellery National Relief Foundation, the industry has provided extensive aid, including Rs 1.42 crore worth of grain kits distributed across Gujarat and financial support for students’ education, announced the GJEPC in a press release.

Healthcare remains a key focus for the GJEPC, with over 5,000 artisans receiving medical assistance in the 2024 financial year. The Swasthya Kosh initiative has processed Rs 184 crore in healthcare benefits, while the Parichay Card programme offers free health insurance worth Rs 35,000 to artisans. More than 1.4 lakh cards have been issued, with a goal of reaching 5 million artisans by 2027.

“At GJEPC, we believe that our artisans are the heart of the industry,” said GJEPC chairman Kirit Bhansali in a press release. “Our mission is to create an ecosystem where every artisan feels valued and secure.”

The GJEPC has also engaged with Gujarat’s government to address the ongoing slowdown in Surat’s diamond industry. With sustained welfare efforts and a focus on industry resilience, the Council aims to support both artisans and businesses in adapting to evolving market dynamics.

“GJEPC has actively participated in all representations made to the Government of Gujarat with regards to the current slowdown in the industry,” said the GJEPC’s regional chairman for Gujarat Jayantibhai N Savaliya. “We attended the meeting called by the Labour Commissioner on March 19, 2025, in Surat, expressing solidarity with artisans. Additionally, we engaged with members of the task force committee constituted by the Hon’ble Chief Minister to address this matter, reaffirming our commitment to the welfare of the artisan community.”

The diamond industry is witnessing a recovery following recent challenges, with prices rising by 10% in recent months due to increased consumer demand across major markets, including India, according to the GJEPC. Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities are emerging as key drivers of this renewed interest, with industry forecasts predicting a 15% to 20% growth in diamond consumption in 2025, particularly for smaller-sized stones.
