Eight people were injured Tuesday evening, four of them in an apparent hit-and-run near Guaranteed Rate Field on the South Side before a White Sox game, authorities said.

A silver sedan with four occupants struck two men and two women just outside the park in the 300 block of West 35th Street around 6:20 p.m., Chicago police said during an evening news conference near 35th Street and Shields Avenue. All four victims were fans heading to the Sox game against the Texas Rangers, officials said.

Three of the victims were left injured at the scene of the collision, while the impact of the collision tossed the fourth victim onto the car, leaving them “partially inside the sunroof,” Chicago deputy police chief Fred Melean told reporters.

Illinois state police and SWAT officers pursued the speeding car onto the southbound Dan Ryan Expressway, with the victim holding on, until it finally stopped near the 47th Street exit. All four victims, ranging in age from 24 to 64, were taken to area hospitals, police said. Two victims were listed in critical condition, while the other two were listed in serious condition, according to the Chicago Fire Department.

The four people inside the car, who ranged from 20 to 25 years old, were also taken to area hospitals and were in police custody, Melean said.

Melean said there is no evidence pointing to this being a targeted incident.

As the game played on inside the adjacent sports arena, police closed off traffic on 35th Street for several hours as investigators and police technicians worked on the scene. An investigator was seen picking up a few articles of fabric left behind from the crash, including what appeared to be a flannel blanket. Just before the streets were reopened, a Chicago fire truck hosed blood off sidewalk where the collision happened.

The White Sox released a statement Tuesday evening offering condolences to the injured victims.

“Our hearts go out to the four fans who were injured this evening, their families and friends, as well as the fans who witnessed the incident on their way to a baseball game,” the statement read.
