A Denver police officer shot and killed a man suspected of domestic violence in south Denver Saturday evening, police said.
The shooting happened in the 2300 block of W. Cedar Avenue just before 8 p.m. Saturday. Neighbors called 911 after seeing the man assaulting a woman and child in that area, police Chief Ron Thomas said. The woman was pushed out of her wheelchair, Thomas said, but was uninjured.
When two officers responded, they arrived to find the woman on the ground outside and an upset man nearby, police alleged. Thomas said during a Saturday night news conference the man began “approaching the officers in a very aggressive manner,” and did not follow their orders to stop. One officer used a Taser on the man, but it did not stop the man’s advance.
The second officer then shot and killed the man, Thomas said. He said officers gave medical care to the man and called for an ambulance. The man was taken to a hospital where he died.
An investigation into the shooting is underway, Thomas said. Denver District Attorney Beth McCann will decide whether the officers acted legally at the conclusion of that investigation.
Thomas said officers did not find a weapon on the man, who has not been publicly identified.
“We understand the officer perceived that this individual was moving toward him in an aggressive manner, very agitated, so unknown at this time if there was a weapon that was seen or why the officer fired,” Thomas said, adding that is part of the investigation.
