Come summer and you start sweating like crazy. Regardless of how much effort you put into a beautiful look, you end up looking like a mess at the end of the day because of the sweat. It can make your scalp look greasy and your hair oily. While it should not make you feel conscious, if you are, fret not because we are talking quick and easy ways to manage greasy hair during summer today!

Health Shots reached out to dermatologist Dr Rinky Kapoor to know what leads to greasy hair and what you can do about it.

What causes greasy hair in summer?

Yes, the summer season in India is not exactly your best friend. The scorching sun and high temperatures spoil your hair, skin and make it difficult to wear your favourite clothes. And greasy hair is one of the most common problems people face in summer. Dr Kapoor says that hair becomes oily during summer owing to the oil secreted by the scalp or due to excessive use of oily hair products. Excess oil production in the scalp makes it sticky and greasy. It clogs the pores and hampers new hair development due to debris, dandruff, and product build-up.

Tips to manage greasy hair in summer

If you are worried about greasy hair in summer, worry not! Here are some vital tips and tricks suggested by the dermatologist that might help you:

1. Clean the hairbrush from time to time

Did you know that dead skin and dirt get accumulated in the hairbrush over time? Not only that, it stays for very long unless you clean it. Not cleaning your hairbrush is not an option, but a must-to-do thing in summer. The dirt particles on your hairbrush can get transferred to the washed hair via the brush, making it look dirty and spoiled. So, make sure you are cleaning your hairbrush, says the expert.

2. Use dry shampoo

Another quick fix for greasy hair is using dry shampoo. If your scalp tends to get oily frequently, you can use it to make it look lively again. When the scalp becomes oily then the roots will also get oily and your hair will look greasy, flat and sticky. It is recommended to dry shampoo the oily roots to prevent the oil from spreading to the entire hair, she adds. However, don’t overuse dry shampoo as it contains chemicals that can be damaging to the hair and scalp.

3. Tomato hair mask

A study published in the Journal of Cosmetic Science found that Lycopersicon esculentum extract in tomatoes is good for hair growth and hair loss. Studies have also found that the acidic nature of tomatoes helps balance the pH levels of the scalp. Here’s a quick recipe for making a tomato hair mask recommended by the expert. Take one ripe tomato and mix it with one tablespoon of fuller’s earth (multani mitti). Now, apply the mask to your hair gently. Leave it for 20 minutes before washing it off with cold water.

4. Shampoo and condition the hair properly

As simple as it may sound, a lot of people don’t apply shampoo and conditioner properly on their roots and scalp. You should refrain from using nails or creating any friction on the strands. You should also avoid aggressive scrubbing as it can cause scalp irritation, which can lead to excess oil production, which can make your hair look oily and greasy. So, wash your hair properly using the right technique.

Note: While these are simple yet effective tips to tackle greasy hair in summer, it is vital to check with your doctor before you try anything.
