Pete Alonso, Gerrit Cole tabbed as All-Star Game reserves – The Denver Post

Mets slugger Pete Alonso and Yankees starter Gerrit Cole were named as reserves for the upcoming MLB All-Star Game.
Alonso is slashing .221/.316/.520 with 25 home runs and 58 RBI for the struggling Mets, however he has not been as effective since returning from a short stint on the injured list after spraining his left wrist and has fallen off his 60-dinger pace.
“I’m having, technically, probably the worst month I’ve ever had in the big leagues,” Alonso said Saturday. “Over the past, I would say five, six days, I’ve been having relatively decent at-bats. And then when I hit something hard, it just always seems to find a glove. For me, this month has been really tough with a lack of performance and then dealing with an injury and then coming back from it. So it’s just been a tough month.”
No other Mets were named to the All-Star team.
Alonso was previously named an NL All-Star in 2019 and 2022. He also won the Home Run Derby in 2019 and 2021 and announced on ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball that he will go for a third win this year.
Cole was named to his sixth All-Star team, his third in a row as a Yankee. Cole is in the midst of another sterling season with the Bombers with a record of 8-2 and a 2.79 ERA in 18 starts after Sunday’s hard-luck defeat. He’s also tossed 118 strikeouts over 109.2 innings. The Yankees are 13-5 in his starts.
“He has continued to just be such a rock for us,” manager Aaron Boone said Sunday. “We’ve been able to lean on him, the consistency. He’s definitely an All-Star. Hopefully he can continue to have the year we expect, and I’m sure he will.”
He previously made the All-Star Game as a member of the Pittsburgh Pirates (2015) and Houston Astros (2018-19).
Teammate Aaron Judge was named a starter for the American League side last week.
The All-Star Game is scheduled for July 11 at T-Mobile Park in Seattle. Starters for the game were announced last week, highlighted by Los Angeles Angels outfielder Mike Trout’s 11th selection and Judge’s fifth.
